When to Seek Help: Advice from an OCD Specialist

ree

As someone who has spent more than a decade helping people improve the quality of their lives and harmonise their work, family, and personal relationships, I understand how challenging it can be to live with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). I am Dr Sasha Mitrofanov, and through my unique combination of methods rooted in Attachment Theory, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Emotional Freedom Techniques, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy including Exposure and Response Prevention, I have supported many individuals in reclaiming control over their lives.

Recognising when to seek help for OCD is a crucial step towards managing symptoms effectively and regaining balance. In this article, I will share my experience and advice to help you understand when it is time to consult a specialist.

What is OCD? A Quick Overview

OCD is a mental health condition characterised by unwanted and persistent thoughts, images, or urges known as obsessions, and repetitive behaviours or mental acts called compulsions. These obsessions and compulsions can significantly interfere with daily life. It is important to distinguish OCD from common worries or habits, as OCD symptoms are more intense, time-consuming, and distressing.

Why Timely Help Matters

Delaying treatment can lead to worsening symptoms, increased anxiety, and a greater impact on relationships, work, or education. Early intervention allows for better outcomes and reduces the time symptoms disrupt your life. In my clinical experience, individuals who seek support promptly tend to experience faster and more sustained improvement.

Signs It is Time to Seek Professional Support

You may benefit from consulting an OCD specialist if you notice any of the following:

  • Obsessions or compulsions that take up several hours each day

  • Difficulty completing daily tasks due to intrusive thoughts or repetitive behaviours

  • Avoidance of social situations or responsibilities because of OCD-related fears

  • Awareness that your behaviours are irrational but feeling unable to stop them

  • Increasing distress, anxiety, or feelings of hopelessness connected to your symptoms

Honest self-reflection and acceptance of these signs are important steps towards recovery.

Common Barriers to Seeking Help and How to Overcome Them

Many people hesitate to seek professional help due to fear of stigma, concerns about being misunderstood, or uncertainty about therapy. It is important to know that seeking help is a sign of strength and that treatment is confidential and tailored to your needs. In my work, I prioritise creating a supportive and safe environment where clients feel heard and understood.

What to Expect When You Consult an OCD Specialist

The assessment process involves a thorough discussion of your symptoms, history, and personal goals. I then create a treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs. Therapy is a collaborative process and I use a blend of various approaches depending on what is needed in each session. Primarily, I use energy psychology techniques, such as Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or tapping. I also draw on my expertise as an NLP Master practitioner. Last but not least, I utilise elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with Exposure and Response Prevention.

How an OCD Specialist Supports You Beyond Symptom Management

My approach goes beyond managing symptoms to include supporting your overall mental well-being. This includes addressing anxiety, building resilience, and improving relationships and quality of life. Many clients also benefit from support with related issues such as co-dependency, panic attacks, depression, or past trauma.

Encouragement and Reassurance

If you recognise these signs or feel your OCD symptoms are impacting your life, seeking help is an important and courageous step. Many people have found profound improvement through specialist treatment, even when other approaches have failed.

It is not within my remit to diagnose mental health conditions. In my experience, a formal diagnosis is not essential for effective treatment, as our work together focuses on your unique situation and needs rather than a label.
